European markets rise on eminent Greek PSI deal

FXstreet.com (Barcelona) - Although the European indexes futures were indicating a lower opening, the European session changed its sentiment as time passed, with an eminent Greek PSI deal on the way and a good Italian bond auction in the middle.

The German DAX 30 rises by 0.36%, the Spanish IBEX 35 gains 0.26%, the Italian FTSE MIB is up by 0.10%. The Greek ATHEX was the biggest winner just a while ago with 1.24% growth, but it plunged suddenly. It’s down by -0.56% at the moment.

 

The French CAC 40 is quoting lower at -0.16%, as well as the British FTSE 100 down by -0.29%.

 

During the European morning, the market has seen George Soros pointing at Germany’s unwillingness to finance deficit nations, while Portugal’s 10-yr bonds have hit a high of 15.24%. IMF’s Lagarde stated her concerns over EU’s actions over Greece and the PSI deal is almost closed.

 

The American futures are quoting higher, with Standard & Poor’s 500 index and the Nasdaq Composite rising by 0.13% and 0.40%, although futures for the Dow Jones Industrial Average are dropping by -0.18%.

 

Crude oil rises by 0.37% and gold by 0.15%.

 

The EUR/USD is bouncing from the European session’s high at 1.3060, trading now around 1.3040.

Many assets are little changed one hour before the US unveils the government's initial report on 4Q economic growth. Signs that the world's largest economy ended 2011 on a solid note would be a sigh of relief for investors worried about Europe being in recession and slowdowns last year in emerging markets. However, estimates have come down for the US' 4Q growth in recent weeks. Also on tap this morning is the final look at the Reuters/University of Michigan consumer-sentiment report, at 9:55am EST. S&P 500 futures are up 1 as oil and gold futures and Treasurys yields are all little changed. But the dollar has weakened further, with the euro back above $1.31, the yen falling below 77 and the Canadian dollar back at par.

MADRID (MarketWatch) -- Spain's statistical agency released downbeat news on unemployment and retail sales on Friday. The Institute for National Statistics said Spain's jobless level reached 5.27 million in the fourth quarter, a gain of 295,300 persons. The unemployment rate now stands at 22.85%, up 1.33 points from the third quarter. Meanwhile, the agency said retail sales fell 6.2% on an annual basis in December, and fell 5.8% as a whole for 2011.

It shows a picture of whether or not consumers are willing to spend money. Generally speaking, a high reading anticipates positive (or bullish) for the USD, while a low reading is seen as negative (or bearish).

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) - The U.S. economy grew 2.8% in the final three months of 2011, propelled by increases in consumer spending and business inventories, according to a preliminary government estimate. The increase in gross domestic product was the fastest in a year and a half. Economists surveyed by MarketWatch projected GDP would rise 3.0%.

Inventory spending surged to an estimated $56 billion after a $2 billion decline in the third quarter,

the Commerce Department reported. Consumer spending rose 2.0%, compared to 1.7% in the third quarter. Government spending fell at all levels. Exports climbed 4.7% while imports rose 4.4%. Real final sales, which exclude imports and inventories, rose just 0.8% after a 3.2% increase in the third quarter. Inflation as measured by the consumer PCE index rose 0.7%, but that was down sharply from a 2.3% increase in the third quarter. Excluding food and energy, the index rose 1.1% compared to 2.1% in the third quarter. Real disposable income edged up 0.8% in quarter and the personal savings rate fell to 3.7% from 3.9%.
