Technicals point to further EUR/USD weaknes

Forex: EUR/USD jumps after US inflation data

FXstreet.com (Córdoba) - The US Dollar weakened and fell against most competitors with EUR/USD soaring to fresh highs after data showed US consumer inflation was mostly in line with expectations in February.

 

EUR/USD jumped, gaining more than 60 pips within minutes and reaching fresh 3-day high of 1.3134 before easing slightly. At time of writing, EUR/USD is trading up 0.3% on the day at 1.3120.

 

As for technical levels, immediate resistances could be found at 1.3140, 1.3180 and 1.3200, while on the other hand supports are seen at 1.3050, 1.3025 and the 1.3005/00 zone.

 

US February CPI posted a 0.4% gain, in line with market's forecast, while core CPI grew 0.1% over the month, sliding in below expectations of 0.2% growth. Year-over-Year inflation rose 2.9% while excluding food and energy it increased 2.2%.

The Industrial Production released by the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve shows the volume of production of US industries such as factories and manufacturing. Up trend is regarded as inflationary which may anticipate interest rates to rise. If High industrial production growth comes out, this may generate a positive sentiment (or bullish) for the USD.

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) - The output of the nation's factories, mines and utilities was flat in February, the Federal Reserve said Friday. This was well below Wall Street expectations of a 0.4% gain. February production was suppressed by a drop in mining and auto production and a flat reading for utility output. January production was revised up to a 0.4% increase from the initial estimate of unchanged. Factory activity alone rose 0.3% in February after a 1.1% increase in the previous month. Capacity utilization - a gauge of slack in the economy - inched down to 78.7% in February from 78.8% in January.

The ICE dollar index DXY -0.28% , which tracks the U.S. unit against a basket of major currencies, turned down to 80.012, off from 80.255 before the data and compared to 80.158 late Thursday.

 

The move erased the index’s week-to-date gain, though it’s still up 1.6% since the beginning of March.

 

 

The euro EURUSD +0.33%  fetched $1.3128, up from $1.3086 earlier and $1.3097 in late North American trade on Thursday.

The Capacity Utilization released by the Federal Reserve Board is the percentage of the US production capacity which is actually used over the short-time period. It is indicative of overall growth and demand in the U.S. economy. A high capacity utilization stimulates inflationary pressures. Generally speaking, a high reading is seen as positive (or bullish) for the USD, while a low reading is seen as negative (or Bearish).
