WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) - U.S. jobless claims fell by 26,000 last week to 350,000, but onetime factors such as fewer auto-sector layoffs than normal likely caused the sharp decline, the Labor Department said Thursday. The level of claims is the lowest in four years, although they could move higher in the next few weeks as onetime seasonal factors unwind. The four-week average of claims, meanwhile, decreased by a smaller 9,750 to 376,500. The monthly average reduces seasonal volatility in the weekly data and is seen as a more accurate barometer of labor-market trends. Continuing claims fell by 14,000 to a seasonally adjusted 3.3 million in the week ended June 30. About 5.87 million people received some kind of state or federal benefit in the week ended June 23, up 17,011 from the prior week.

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) - The price of goods imported into the U.S. fell 2.7% in June, a second straight monthly decline that mainly reflected sinking oil prices, the government reported Thursday. Economists surveyed by MarketWatch had expected a 1.9% drop. The decline in import prices last month was the biggest since December 2008, the Labor Department said. The price of fuel imports sank 10.1%. Excluding fuel, import prices fell a much smaller 0.3%. The price of U.S. exports, meanwhile, decreased 1.7% in June following a 0.4% pullback in May.

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Treasury prices held onto gains and the dollar extended its rise on Thursday after a U.S. report showed jobless claims fell more than expected in the latest week. A separate report showed import prices declined again last month. Yields on 10_year notes 10_YEAR -1.64% , which move inversely to prices, fell 3 basis points to 1.49% - not far above their all-time low.

 

The dollar index DXY +0.32% , which measures the greenback against a basket of six currencies, rose to 83.789, from 83.733 before the data and 83.542 in late North American trading Wednesday. The euro EURUSD -0.5458% fell to $1.2169, touching a two-year low and from $1.2226 Wednesday. Still to come is the Treasury Department's sale of 30-year bonds 30_YEAR -1.07% .
