WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- Private-sector payrolls rose 163,000 in July, led by small businesses and the service-providing sector, according to the ADP ADP -1.38% employment report released Wednesday. The June level was revised to a gain of 172,000 from a prior estimate of 176,000. Markets look to ADP's report on private-sector payrolls to provide some guidance on the U.S. Labor Department's jobs estimate, which will be released Friday and includes information on both private- and public-sector payrolls. Economists polled by MarketWatch expect the U.S. Labor Department to report Friday that nonfarm-payroll employment rose 100,000 in July, compared with 80,000 in June. They also expect that the unemployment rate remained at 8.2%.

Gold bulls feeling unsure ahead of FOMC

The ADP figures put a damper on gold, sending it $7 lower to a four-day low of $1607. Gold risks a further pullback if the Fed doesn't shift to a more dovish stance but that is unlikely. Introducing more constructive language or extending the pledge to keep rates low until mid-2015 sends the signal that action is coming at the next meeting in September. Combined with action from the BOE and ECB on Thursday, gold may be poised for a record run. Bloomberg writes that the most-accurate gold forecaster last month expects further declines, while the next two best analysts expect record highs within a year.

Summary

Growth of the U.S. manufacturing sector slowed to its weakest pace in nearly three years in July, according to the final Markit U.S. Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ IndexTM (PMITM)1. At 51.4, down from the flash estimate of 51.8 and below June’s reading of 52.5, the PMI hit a 34-month low and signalled only a modest expansion in July.

PMI index readings above 50.0 signal an increase or improvement on the prior month, while readings below 50.0 indicate a decrease.
