SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) — The dollar pared gains against the euro on Wednesday after a report showed the U.S. economy grew at a faster pace in the second quarter than previously estimated.

 

Activity remains range-bound as traders await details of efforts by European officials to bring down borrowing costs for Spain and Italy.

 

Also, U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke will speak on Friday in Jackson Hole, Wyo.

 

The ICE dollar index DXY +0.09% , which tracks the greenback against a basket of six major currencies, traded at 81.432, compared to 81.334 in late North American trading Tuesday.

 

Similarly, the WSJ dollar index XX:BUXX +0.09% , which uses a slightly larger comparison basket, rose to 70.91 from 70.87.

 

The euro EURUSD -0.1757% pared losses to buy $1.2551 from $1.2568 Tuesday.

Pending home sales hits more than 2-year peak

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- Pending home sales climbed 2.4% in July to the highest level since April 2010, when a home-buyer tax credit was set to expire. The National Association of Realtors said Wednesday its pending-home-sales index rose to 101.7 in July from 99.3 in June, which is 12.4% above July 2011 levels. The data reflect contracts but not closings. "While the month-to-month movement has been uneven, more importantly we now have 15 consecutive months of year-over-year gains in contract activity," said Lawrence Yun, chief economist of the NAR. Existing-home sales are projected to rise 8% to 9% in 2012, followed by another 7% to 8% gain in 2013, the NAR forecasts. Home prices are expected to increase 10% cumulatively over the next two years.
