LONDON (MarketWatch) -- European stock markets opened higher on Friday, a day after Spain presented spending cuts and tax hikes worth 13 billion euros ($16.7 billion), while investors waited for the result of bank stress tests for the country later in the day. The Stoxx Europe 600 index XX:SXXP +0.34% rose 0.3% to 272.51. Spain's IBEX 35 index XX:IBEX +1.06% outperformed other country-specific indexes and gained 1% to 7,921.10, with Banco Santander SA ES:SAN +1.06% SAN +2.26% up 0.9%. Elsewhere, Air France-KLM FR:AF -1.61% jumped 4.8% after a broker upgrade. The CAC 40 index FR:PX1 +0.43% was up 0.4% to 3,451.82. In Germany, Deutsche Bank AG DE:DBK +0.31% DB +2.32% added 1.5%, and the DAX 30 index DX:DAX +0.50% gained 0.4% to 7,319.45. The U.K.'s FTSE 100 index UK:UKX +0.38% picked up 0.3% to 5,798.20, with resource firms moving higher, as metals and oil prices rose. Rio Tinto PLC UK:RIO +1.75% RIO +1.76% AU:RIO -0.43% gained 1.3% and BP PLC UK:BP +0.52% BP +1.58% added 0.3%.

STOCKHOLM--Demand for heavy trucks within the European Union, key to Swedish truckmakers Scania AB (SCV-A.SK) and Volvo AB (VOLV-B.SK), fell 7.3% in July and 9.7% in August, data from European auto industry association ACEA showed Friday.

 

ACEA said all significant markets contracted, Germany by 6.8%, France 8.4%, the U.K. 10.4%, Spain 12.3% and Italy 24.3%.

 

In August, only the U.K. posted growth--just 0.7% on year. Germany, France, Spain and Italy all faced a double-digit downturn.

 

Total demand for new commercial vehicles in the EU fell 5.1% in July and 12.4% in August on the year.

 

European truck deliveries represented about 40% of total truck deliveries for both Scania and Volvo in 2011.

 

Shares in Scania closed at SEK120.30 Thursday, while shares in Volvo closed at SEK94.25.

HONG KONG (MarketWatch) -- Fitch Ratings on Friday lowered its 2012 growth target for China to 7.8% from 8% and said it does not expect a hard landing as authorities have the scope to use fiscal and monetary policies to ward off a harsh downturn. The ratings agency acknowledged that slowing exports were dampening China's growth, but said the cooling underway was also a product of the central government's effort to squeeze consumer and house price inflation out of the system.

SYDNEY (MarketWatch) — Asia stocks traded mostly higher Friday, as investors welcomed progress on Spanish fiscal reform, with markets on track to round out a quarter of large gains for some markets and losses for others.

 

South Korea’s Kospi KR:SEU +0.38% advanced 0.4%, while Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 Index AU:XJO +0.06% edged 0.1% higher.

 

In China, the Hang Seng Index HK:HSI +0.39% rose 0.4%.

 

The Shanghai Composite index CN:000001 +1.45% outperformed with a 1.4% climb, extending a steep advance made Thursday on news of a record weekly liquidity injection from the People’s Bank of China.

 

Heading the other way, the Nikkei Stock Average JP:100000018 -0.89% declined 0.9% as exporters lost more ground amid some weak data.
