ทองคำจะฟื้นกลับมาอีกครั้งหลังเดือนกันยายน จากดอลล่าร์อ่อนค่า Pierre Lassonde ประธาน Newmont Mining Corp ซึ่งเป็นบริษัทเหมืองทองยักษ์ใหญ่อันดับ 2 ของโลก กล่าวแสดงความเห็น

ราคาทองคำได้ตกลงไป 20% จากระดับราคาสูงสุดในรอบ 26 ปีเมื่อเดือนที่แล้ว โดยมีเหตุบางส่วนจากการที่ดอลล่าร์ดีดกลับขึ้นมา ทำให้โลหะมีค่าลดความน่าสนใจในการเป็นทางเลือกในการลงทุนไป ดอลล่าร์น่าจะต้องลดลงไปอีกอย่างน้อย 30% เมื่อเทียบกับเงินสกุลต่างๆ Lassonde กล่าวให้สัมภาษณ์ในสวิสเซอร์แลนด์

Golds rally will resume after September as the dollar declines, said Pierre Lassonde, the president of Newmont Mining Corp., the worlds second-largest gold producer.

 

Gold has dropped 20 percent from a 26-year high last month, partly as the dollar rebounded, reducing the appeal of precious metals as an alternative investment. The dollar still has to decline at least 30 percent against a basket of currencies, Lassonde said today in an interview in Switzerland.

"Gold is still early in the bull market and what makes it so is basically the U.S. dollar," Lassonde, 59, said at the London Bullion Market Association conference in Montreux, Switzerland. The drop in gold prices since last month was "a mini-correction. By September it will all be over."

 

Gold for immediate delivery rose 80 cents, or 0.1 percent, to $582.25 an ounce at 3:36 p.m. London time. Prices may touch $850 in the next year to 18 months and then climb over $1,000 during a bull market which may last five to 10 more years, he said. Gold has climbed from a 20-year low of $251.95 in 1999.

Lassonde, who oversaw gold production of 200 tons in mines last year, says Newmont doesnt hedge its gold sales and has no plans to because hes "bullish" on gold.

 

The U.S. dollar will weaken because of the worsening U.S. current-account deficit, said Lassonde, who is also chairman of the World Gold Council.

 

Depending on Dollar

A widening U.S. deficit means more dollars need to be converted into foreign currency to pay for imports. It also indicates the dollar may need to weaken to make U.S. exports cheaper and imports more costly to close the gap.

 

The U.S. current-account deficit, the broadest measure of trade, surpassed $800 billion in 2005 for the first time.

About "80 percent of golds moves has to do the U.S. dollar," Lassonde said. The dollar has to fall to stabilize the current-account deficit and "that at the end of the day is going to make gold more precious."

 

Denver-based Newmont Mining was the worlds largest gold producer last year before Barrick Gold Corp., based in Toronto, spent $10 billion buying rival Placer Dome Inc. this year to become the largest.
