NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- U.S. stocks opened the first session of 2012 in a rally mode, with Wall Street optimistic after positive manufacturing data from China, and expectations for the same in the United States.

 

The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +1.86% gained 156.13 points, or 1.3%, to 12,403.59.

The S&P 500 SPX +1.85% rose 20.83 points, or 1.6%, to 1,278.43.

The Nasdaq Composite COMP +2.15% climbed 59.94 points, or 2.1%, to 2,660.09.

The Construction Spending released by the US Census Bureau is an indicator that measures the total amount of spending in the US on all types of construction. The residential construction component is useful for predicting future national new home sales and mortgage origination volume. A high reading is seen as positive, or bullish for the USD, while a low reading is seen as negative, or bearish.

It is a significant indicator of the overall economic condition in US. The ISM prices Paid represents business sentiment regarding future inflation. A high reading is seen as positive for the USD, while a low reading is seen as negative.

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- The U.S. dollar slipped further and Treasury prices remained down on Tuesday after the Institute for Supply Management's manufacturing index for December rose to 53.9, a little better than some economists expected.

 

 

The euro EURUSD +0.85% rose to $1.3045, from $1.3032 prior to the data and $1.2931 in late Monday trade in North America.

The dollar index DXY -0.57% , which tracks the greenback against six currencies, fell to 79.689, versus 79.762 before the data and down 0.6% from last week, according to FactSet Research data. Yields on 10-year notes 10_YEAR +4.22% , which move inversely to prices, rose 9 basis points to 1.97%, after topping 2% earlier.

FRANKFURT (MarketWatch) -- France on Tuesday sold 8.7 billion euros ($11.3 billion) of short-dated Treasury bills, with yields edging up slightly from low levels seen in an auction in late 2011.

France's public debt agency said it sold 4.4 billion euros of 3-month bills at an average weighted yield of 0.023%, up from 0.005% in a Dec. 19 sale.

 

It also sold 2.2 billion euros of six-month bills at a rate of 0.074%, up from 0.034% in December, and

2.1 billion euros of 12-month bills at a rate of 0.136%, down from 0.176%.
