WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) - The federal government will issue the monthly report on U.S. employment at 8:30 a.m. Eastern. Economists surveyed by MarketWatch forecast the U.S. gained a net 121,000 jobs in January, compared to an initially reported 200,000 increase in December. The unemployment rate is expected to be 8.5% and average hourly wages are seen rising 0.2%. As part of an annual "benchmarking" process, the Labor Department will also issued revised employment data for 2011, based on more complete information. The economy likely added a few hundred thousand additional jobs than previously reported, the Labor Department has said. As a result, that could lead to a slight revision in December's jobless rate of 8.5%.

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) - The U.S. economy gained 243,000 jobs in January and the unemployment rate slipped to 8.3%, the Labor Department said Friday. Economists surveyed by MarketWatch had forecast the U.S. would add 121,000 jobs last month, with a jobless rate of 8.5%.

 

The private sector boosted payrolls by 257,000, led by large increases in manufacturing, professional services, leisure and hospitality and health care. Average hourly earnings rose 0.2% to $23.29 and hours worked were unchanged at 34.5. Job gains for December and November were revised up by a combined 60,000. The U.S. created 1.82 million jobs in 2011, based on newly revised tax and other data, compared to an originally reported increase of 1.64 million.

About Greece, everything points to the talks failing--the meeting of the triple A EMU members (a mere four names of 17), the Eurogroup meeting on Greece for Monday cancelled, the big gun Ackermann joining talks in Athens this weekend, the troika not ready to report. The second bailout depends on the haircut deal but economists seem to be saying that the private sector deal is basically irrelevant--another bailout will be throwing good money after bad. The bailout is not worth doing in the context of Greece refusing to adopt structural reform. The tax collection story alone is fatal, let alone the unions and employers refusing to cut worker compensation.

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- U.S. stocks leapt on Friday as Wall Street embraced employment rising more than expected last month and the jobless rate dropping to a three-year low.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.89% advanced 106.07 points to 12,811.48.

The S&P 500 Index SPX +0.90% rose 11.97 points to 1,337.64.

The Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.97% added 27.81 points to 2,887.49.
