NEW YORK (MarketWatch) — The dollar extended gains swiftly Thursday after the European Central Bank cut interest rates. Markets also got news of more stimulus measures from the People’s Bank of China and the Bank of England.

 

“Following this morning’s actions by the ECB and the BOE, it is difficult not to be bullish on the near-term prospects for the U.S. dollar amidst ongoing crisis in Europe,” said Michael Woolfolk, senior currency strategist at Bank of New York Mellon.

 

 

The dollar index DXY +0.69% , which measures the greenback against a basket of six currencies, rose to 82.821, from 82.132 in late North American trading on Wednesday

 

The euro EURUSD -1.1382% fell to $1.2392 from $1.2534 in late trading the previous day — when trading was light due to U.S. stock- and bond-market closures for Independence Day

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) — Private-sector payrolls picked up in June, suggesting that unemployment may have declined, according to a report released Thursday by payrolls-processor Automatic Data Processing Inc.

 

According to ADP’s ADP +0.43%  data, private-sector payrolls rose 176,000 in June, led by small businesses and the service-providing sector. Economists had expected an increase of 100,000. The May level was revised to a gain of 136,000 from a prior estimate of 133,000.

MADRID (MarketWatch) -- European Central Bank President Mario Draghi on Thursday said further downside risks to euro-area growth have materialized and indications for the second quarter point to weakened growth and heightened uncertainty. Inflationary pressure has been dampened by the risks to growth, he said. The ECB on Thursday cut its benchmark lending rate by a quarter of a percentage point to a record-low 0.75% as expected. It also lowered the deposit and marginal lending-facility rates. "Beyond the short term, we expect the euro-area economy to recover gradually but see momentum dampened by number of factors," said Draghi at a press conference. Such factors include tensions in euro-area sovereign-debt markets and high unemployment, which will weigh on underlying growth momentum, he said. "Risks surrounding the euro area continue to be on the downside."

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- U.S. stocks opened lower on Thursday, while the dollar rallied after the the president of the European Central Bank said downside risks to the euro-area growth outlook have materialized. The news seemed to overshadow positive U.S. economic data. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.45% dropped 72 points to 12,871. The S&P 500 index SPX -0.33% fell 6 points to 1,368 and the Nasdaq Composite COMP -0.09% declined 6.5 points to 2,969.5.
