WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) - The underlying rate of U.S. inflation accelerated by the fastest pace in four months in January, the Labor Department said Friday. The consumer price index increased 0.2%, driven by the first increase in gasoline prices since September. Food prices rose 0.2 % for the second straight month. The core CPI index, excluding food and energy costs, was up 0.2% in January. Economists were expecting the CPI to rise 0.3% in January after remaining flat in the prior month. The core rate was expected to rise 0.2% after rising 0.1% in the previous month.

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- U.S. stock futures held steady after the government's consumer price index rose 0.2% in January, just under the 0.3% expected by analysts. The core rate that excludes volatile food and energy prices held at 0.2%, in line with expectations.

 

Futures for the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJH2 +0.28% held a 36-point gain at 12,906.

Futures for the S&P 500 Index SPH2 +0.21% were up 2.2 points at 1,357.

Futures for the Nasdaq 100 NDH2 0.00% were off half a point at 2,593.

FXstreet.com (Córdoba) - The Euro rose to fresh daily highs against the Dollar after the release of US CPI figures, which came mostly in line with expectations and showed the fastest pace of increase since September.

 

EUR/USD climbed to a fresh high of 1.3189 in recent dealings and was last trading up 0.3% on the day at 1.3175. The shared-currency has been underpinned on Friday by cautious optimism that Greece's bailout deal could be reached on Monday.

 

In terms of technical levels, on the upside, the 1.3200/10 area is next resistance in line, followed by 1.3240 and 1.3285, while on the downside supports could be found at 1.3115, 1.3070 and 1.3050.

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) — With gasoline rising at the pump for the first time in four months, U.S. consumer prices for January increased at the largest rate since September, the Labor Department reported Friday.

 

The consumer price index rose a seasonally adjusted 0.2% on the month, slightly below economists’ consensus expectations of a 0.3% increase.

 

Energy prices rose 0.2% last month, also the first increase since September.

 

The core CPI — the measure of retail-level inflation that strips out food and energy prices to get a better handle on underlying inflationary trends — increased 0.2% on a seasonally adjusted basis, in line with expectations.

 

Core prices have been increasing at a rate of either 0.1% or 0.2% since the summer.
