MADRID (MarketWatch) -- European stock markets extended gains on Monday afternoon in the wake of stronger-than-expected U.S. retail sales data.

The Stoxx Europe 600 index XX:SXXP +0.45% , up 0.4% ahead of the data, rose 0.6% to 255.05 after retail spending rose 0.8% in March, against economists' expectations for a 0.4% gain. Drug and oil stocks supported the Stoxx 600, while banks tugged on the downside.

The German DAX 30 index DX:DAX +0.54% rose nearly 1% to 6,642

the French CAC 40 index FR:PX1 +1.14% rose 1% to 3,223.17.

The FTSE 100 index UK:UKX +0.54% rose 0.8% to 5,696.13. Stocks in Spain and Portugal remained weaker, though pared losses, with the IBEX 35 index XX:IBEX +0.07% flat at 7,249.30 and the Portugal PSI 20 index PT:PSI20 -0.42% off 0.5% to 5,193.14.

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) - U.S. stock-index futures extended Monday gains after the government reported retail sales rose a better-than-expected 0.8% in March.

Futures for the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJM2 +0.45% added 74 points, or 0.6%, to 12,862. Those for

the S&P 500 SPM2 +0.37% rose 7 points, or 0.5%, to 1,372.

Futures for the Nasdaq 100 NDM2 +0.43% advanced 14.25 points, or 0.5%, to 2,707.75.

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) - Foreign investors were buyers in February of a net $24.8 billion of long-term U.S. securities, Treasury Department data released Monday showed. This is down from the revised $95.7 billion of net purchases in January. Overseas investors were net buyers of $15.4 billion of Treasurys in February, down from net purchases of $84 billion in January. They bought a net $10.1 billion of government agency bonds in February compared with $9.6 billion in January. International demand for corporate bonds remained weak. Foreigners were net sellers of $8.2 billion of U.S. corporate bonds in February after net sales of $1.3 billion in the previous month. Foreign-based investors purchased a net $7.6 billion of U.S. equities in February. Taking into account purchases by U.S. residents and overseas investors, the net foreign purchases of long-term securities was $10.1 billion in February, down from $102.4 billion in January. According to the data, China-based investors increased their holdings of U.S. Treasurys for the second straight month.

UK Keeps AAA Ratings at S&P as Pound Advances against the Euro

Tradervox (Dublin) - The Standard and Poor’s have disagreed with Fitch and Moody’s on the UK economic outlook. The S&P have confirmed UK AAA economic outlook despite the other two warning that the country might be at risk of losing this status. According to a statement from S&P the coalition led by the UK Prime Minister David Cameron have succeeded in ensuring that determined focus is put on curbing the current budget deficit. The statement gave accolade to the political institution in the country for being able to act quickly to economic challenges.
