WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) - Orders for U.S.-made durable goods rose 1.6% in June on stronger demand for airplanes and defense equipment, the Commerce Department reported Thursday. The overall increase in June was stronger than expected. Economists polled by MarketWatch expected a 0.6% rise in durables. Orders in May were revised up to a 1.6% gain from the previous estimate of a 1.3% increase. Details of the report were weaker than the headline suggested. Most other categories of orders were lower. Excluding defense goods, orders were down 0.7%. Excluding transportation equipment, orders were down 1.1%. Shipments rose 0.1% in June. Inventories rose 0.3%. Orders for core capital goods fell 1.4% in the month, the second decline in the past three months.

U.S. jobless claims fall 35,000 to 353,000

Auto manufacturers used to schedule brief shutdowns of plants every July to retool for new models, but the size of temporary layoffs has varied widely since the industry was bailed out several years ago. That makes the claims report especially volatile in July and less useful in gauging labor-market trends. Economists surveyed by MarketWatch had projected they would drop to 378,000 from last week's upwardly revised level of 388,000. A more accurate barometer of labor-market trends, the four-week claims average, declined by 8,750 to 367,250,000, the Labor Department said Thursday. The four-week average reduces seasonal volatility in the weekly data. Meanwhile, continuing claims decreased by 30,000 to a seasonally adjusted 3.29 million in the week ended July 14. About 6.0 million people received some kind of state or federal benefit in the week ended July 7, up 280,405 from the prior week.

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- The dollar extended a decline and Treasury prices stayed down on Thursday after a pair of reports showed first-time U.S. jobless claims fell more than forecast in the latest week and orders for durable goods improved more than seen in June. The dollar had already turned sharply higher and bond prices reversed a gain after European Central Bank President Mario Draghi reportedly made comments taken to "suggest that the ECB could soon take measures to help alleviate the selling pressure on the peripheral bonds," said currency strategists at Citi.

 

The dollar index DXY -0.95% , which measures the greenback against a basket of six other major currencies, fell to 82.743, from 82.843 before the data and 83.573 late Wednesday in North America.

 

The euro EURUSD +1.2002% rose to $1.2293, from $1.2152 Wednesday. Yields on 10-year notes 10_YEAR +1.50% , which move inversely to prices, rose 3 basis points to 1.44%. Coming up, the government will auction 7-year notes 7_YEAR +2.33% .

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- U.S. stock futures rallied harder Thursday after economic reports cast a better-than-anticipated light on the U.S. labor market as well as demand for durable goods. Futures for the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJU2 +1.11% rose 141 points to 12,778. Futures for the S&P 500 index SPU2 +1.37% advanced 17.2 points to 1,352.10. Futures for the Nasdaq 100 NDU2 +1.44% climbed 34.75 points to 2,578.50.

LONDON (MarketWatch) -- European stocks markets rallied on Thursday, as European Central Bank President Mario Draghi expressed strong commitment to support the euro, when talking at an investment conference in London. In addition, U.S. jobless claims fell by 35,000 to 353,000, better than expected by analysts surveyed by MarketWatch. The Stoxx 600 index XX:SXXP +2.18% rallied 2% to 255.43. Spanish stocks were also shooting higher, as government bond yields declined sharply. The IBEX 35 index XX:IBEX +3.55% jumped 3.8% to 6,232.20. In France, the CAC 40 FR:PX1 +3.23% added 3.1% to 3,175.44, while the German DAX 30 index DX:DAX +1.90% rose 1.8% to 6,522.05. The U.K.'s FTSE 100 index UK:UKX +1.53% traded 1.4% higher at 5,575.55.
