WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) - U.S. consumer prices rose 0.1% in October, as higher food and shelter prices offset a decline in energy costs, the Labor Department said Thursday. So-called core prices rose a seasonally adjusted 0.2%. The core figure strips out volatile food and energy costs. Economists surveyed by MarketWatch had forecast a 0.1% increase in the main CPI and a 0.1% advance in the core rate. Consumer prices have risen an unadjusted 2.2% over the past 12 months, up from 2% in the prior month. Core CPI was unchanged at 2% on a year-over-year basis. Inflation-adjusted hourly wages, meanwhile, fell by 0.2% in October. Real wages are down 0.7 % over the past 12 months.

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) - The Empire State manufacturing index contracted for the fourth month in a row, the New York Federal Reserve Bank said Thursday. The index rose to negative 5.2 in November from negative 6.2 in October. Economists polled by MarketWatch expected the index to weaken to negative 6.7. Details were mixed. The key new orders sub-index rose above zero for the first time since June and shipments shot up to its highest level since May. However, employment conditions weakened. Only 21% of manufacturers reported a loss of activity due to Hurricane Sandy but all firms reported some reduction in activity.

แพทย์หญิงสร้อยสอางค์ พิกุลสด ผู้อำนวยการศูนย์บริการโลหิตแห่งชาติ เผยว่า ขณะนี้ศูนย์บริการโลหิตแห่งชาติสภากาชาดไทยประสบปัญหาจัดหาโลหิตไม่ได้ตามเป้าหมาย คือ จะต้องได้รับโลหิตบริจาควันละอย่างน้อย 1,500 ยูนิต จึงจะเพียงพอสำหรับผู้ป่วยแต่สถานการณ์โลหิตตั้งแต่เดือนพฤศจิกายน 2555 เป็นต้นมาจนถึงขณะนี้พบว่า มีผู้บริจาคโลหิตลดลงจากเดิมที่ได้รับโลหิตบริจาควันละ 1,500 – 2,000 ยูนิตเหลือเพียงวันละ 1,200 ยูนิตทำให้ไม่มีโลหิตสำรองคงคลัง ซึ่งตามมาตรฐานต้องมีโลหิตสำรองวันละอย่างน้อย 3,000 ยูนิตจึงจะเพียงพอสำหรับผู้ป่วย

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) - The damage caused by Hurricane Sandy sent U.S. jobless claims soaring by 78,000 in the week ended Nov. 10 to an 18-month high of 439,000, according to the latest government figures. A Labor Department official on Thursday said claims surged in the eastern parts of the country that laid in the path of the storm. The destruction of job sites, closure of government offices and widespread power outages caused more people to file claims after an initial delay. Economists surveyed by MarketWatch had expected claims to climb to 380,000 on a seasonally adjusted basis. Initial claims from two weeks ago were revised up to 361,000 from an original reading of 355,000, based on more complete data collected at the state level. The average of new claims over the past month, meanwhile, climbed by 11,750 to 383,750. The four-week average reduces seasonal volatility in the weekly data and is seen as a more accurate barometer of labor-market trends. Also, Labor said continuing claims increased by 171,000 to a seasonally adjusted 3.33 million in the week ended Nov. 3. Continuing claims reflect the number of people already receiving benefits. About 4.98 million people received some kind of state or federal benefit in the week ended Oct. 27 down 100,423 from the prior week. Total claims are reported with a two-week lag.

LONDON (MarketWatch) -- European stock markets dropped further in afternoon action on Thursday, after U.S. jobless claims soared by 78,000 to 439,000 last week, partly due to Hurricane Sandy.

 

The Stoxx Europe 600 index XX:SXXP -0.89% lost 0.8% to 265.86, down from trading around 266.27 before the data.

Germany's DAX 30 index DX:DAX -1.09% sank 1% to 7,031. 72, while France's CAC 40 index FR:PX1 -0.70% gave up 0.6% to 3,378.35. The U.K.'s FTSE 100 index UK:UKX -0.52% lost 0.5% to 5,693.61.

FXstreet.com (Barcelona) - Nomura Economists Silvio Peruzzo, Stella Wang and Jacques Cailloux have taken a look at today's data which confirmed that the Eurozone has moved into recession.

 

The euro-area economy contracted by 0.1% q-o-q in Q3, following -0.2% q-o-q in Q2, technically entering a double-dip recession. GDP performances diverged significantly across countries, with Germany and France expanding (0.2% q-o-q) and Italy and Spain posting a contraction (Italy: -0.2% q-o-q, Spain: -0.4% q-o-q. The Dutch economy shrank sharply in Q3, by 1.1% q-o-q (consensus: -0.2% q-o-q)

 

Citing their own research the team notes that “Q3 GDP figures in Italy and Spain have been supported by temporary factors that we expect to unwind in the current quarter.”

 

They continue to explain that additionally, survey data suggests that the pace of contraction in activity is accelerating in the current quarter and they forecast a decline in GDP of 0.4% q-o-q in Q4 to confirm that the recession is deepening.

 

They finish by stating that their baseline scenario for the new year remains one of deep recession in the periphery and of shallow recession in the core. Looking to the Euro area as a whole, they expect the economy to contract by 0.8% in 2013.
