BoE Minutes: MPC voted 7-2 to keep stimulus steady

FXstreet.com (Barcelona) - BoE Minutes from the MPC monetary policy meeting held on 7 and 8 March and released today reveal that the Committee voted unanimously in favor of maintaining the interest rate at 0.5%.

 

As far as the proposition to continue with the program of asset purchases totaling £325 billion is concerned, seven MPC members voted in favor while two voted against. David Miles and Adam Posen who voted against preferred to boost the QE program by £25 billion to a total of £350 billion.

According to the minutes, the MPC “judged that the recent data had evolved in line with its expectations and that there had been little change to the balance of risks to UK activity and inflation.”

 

The majority of the MPC members did not consider a further increase of the asset purchase program necessary after the February expansion. David Miles and Adam Posen argued however that “ larger monetary stimulus was warranted to reduce the risk that persistently weak growth would damage the future supply capacity of the economy,” and that the stimulus could be withdrawn in case of a rise of upward risks to inflation.

Forex: EUR/USD plunging ahead of American session

FXstreet.com (Barcelona) - US MBA mortage applications point to another decline in the week ending at March 16, by -7.2%. Mortgage applications have been dropping six weeks in a row.

 

The EUR/USD, capped at 1.3285, is extending losses below the European support at 1.3250. At the moment of writing, the pair is quoting at 1.3240.

 

Both Germany and Portugal had solid take ups and improved yields at their bond auctions today. MADRID (MarketWatch) — U.S. stock-market futures edged higher on Wednesday as European stocks wobbled and commodity prices attempted a rebound ahead of a report that could show a rise in U.S. home sales.

 

Futures for the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJM2 +0.15%  rose 20 points to 13,128.

 

S&P 500 Index futures SPM2 +0.20%  gained 2.7 points to 1,402.70, while Nasdaq 100 futures NDM2 +0.10%  rose 2.5 points to 2,738.

FRANKFURT (MarketWatch) -- Demand from euro-zone banks for the European Central Bank's seven-day dollar liquidity offer fell Wednesday, a likely sign that dollar funding on the interbank market is becoming more available to euro-zone banks.

 

The ECB said that it allotted $1.802 billion at its seven-day fixed-rate dollar swap operation, down from the $2.318 billion allotted last week.

 

Six banks requested dollar liquidity against eligible collateral at a fixed rate of 0.65%, the ECB said, down from seven last week. The ECB never discloses the names of banks to which it lends dollars via the facility.

 

Dollar liquidity became less available in the second half of last year as a result of rising worries among U.S. banks over the euro-zone's sovereign debt crisis. Nov. 30, the world's major central banks moved in concert to provide cheap dollars to banks after dollar funding stress intensified.

 

However, since then, dollar-funding stress has eased, due partly to the ECB flooding the euro-zone banking system with euro liquidity through its three-year loans. The liquidity boost from the ECB prevented a euro funding crisis, helping restore trust among U.S. banks in their European counterparts.

 

European banks need dollars to fund their non-euro activities. To provide the dollar loans, the ECB borrows the same amount from the U.S. Federal Reserve.
