MADRID (MarketWatch) -- Jobless claims in Spain fell 2.1% in June versus the prior month, the third consecutive monthly drop, according to official data released Tuesday. The number of jobless fell by 98,853 compared to May to a total of 4,615,269. It was the biggest May to June fall in jobless claims on record. June traditionally is a month where jobless claims tend to fall, as hiring to ready for the tourist season increases.

the metal is making initial probe of resistance at $1605 while more substantial resistance is seen at $1622; clearance of highs from June between $1635-40 could trigger a larger short covering rebound.

GOLD – Prices put in a Doji candlestick below resistance at 1606.74, the 23.6%Fibonacci expansion, warning of indecision and hinting a move lower may be ahead. Initial support lines up at 1585.44, the 38.2% level, with a break below that targeting the 61.8% Fibat 1551.50. Alternatively, a break higher aims at falling trend line resistance set from late March, now at 1621.45.

US DOLLAR – Prices are consolidating above support in the 10037-49 area, with resistance seen at 10079 marked by the 38.2% Fibonacci expansion. A break above this level targets the 23.6% level at 10123. Alternatively, a push below support exposes the 61.8% Fib at 10009.

TEHRAN: Iran on Tuesday test-fired in its central desert a ballistic missile capable of striking Israel as part of war games designed to show its ability to retaliate if attacked, media said.

 

Iran's Revolutionary Guard fired the medium-range Shahab-3 missile at a mock target in the Kavir Desert on the second day of its Great Prophet 7 exercise, which is due to end on Wednesday, Iran's Al-Alam television network reported.

 

The Shahab-3 has a range of up to 2,000 kilometres (1,200 miles), which means it is theoretically able to hit Israel, which is some 1,000 kilometres away.

TOKYO: The euro was weak in Asian trade on Tuesday, after the common currency rallied sharply late last week with traders now focusing on a European Central Bank (ECB) rate-setting meeting.

 

The common currency was quoted at $1.2585 and 100.09 yen in Tokyo morning trade, little changed from $1.2582 and 100.05 yen in New York late Monday.

 

The dollar was also little changed at 79.53 yen, from 79.50 yen in the previous day's trade, ahead of key US jobs data later in the week as markets remain cautious about the health of the world's biggest economy.

 

Weak manufacturing reports out of the United States and China have stoked worries about the world economy.

 

A surprise list of measures aimed at reversing the eurozone's spiralling crisis had sent the euro higher last week, but the unit's rally quickly fizzled with traders looking for what, if any, action the ECB would take at its policy meeting Thursday.

 

The ECB's "Governing Council may have little choice but to implement a range of policy tools to shore up the ailing economy as the region faces a growing threat of a prolonged recession," David Song, Currency Analyst at DailyFX, told Dow Jones Newswires.

 

Meanwhile, the dollar would likely be capped around the 79.5 yen level before the release of economic data later this week, dealers said.

 

"Ahead of the US market close (Wednesday) and US jobs data due out Thursday and Friday...the dollar-yen rate will be top-heavy at about 79.5 yen levels," said Masafumi Yamamoto, currency strategist at Barclays Capital.
