Forex: EUR/USD bounces from 1.2217

FXstreet.com (Barcelona) - The European morning plunge of the EUR/USD from just below 1.2300 reached as low as 1.2217, from where it is currently bouncing. At the moment, the pair trades at 1.2220/30 area ahead of the American session and the housing data releases, the second Fed’s Bernanke testimony before the Senate and the Beige Book.

 

The European morning was marked by ECB’s Asmussen stating how divided the North and South are and the need to unite for integration or break apart. Meanwhile, German Chancellor Merkel, although optimistic, can’t be sure the European project will succeed, which might have triggered the EUR/USD plunge.

 

“EUR/USD remains in a tight consolidation band between 1.2150 and 1.2320. Scope is seen for a short-term burst higher to re-test the 1.2320 region, where a lower high is favoured to form”, wrote MIG Bank analyst Bijoy Kar, pointing to 1.2380 as a stronger resistance target.

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) - Construction on new U.S. homes in June rose 6.9% to an annual rate of 760,000, the highest level since October 2008, but building permits fell slightly, the Commerce Department reported Wednesday. Housing starts in May were revised up to 711,000 from an original reading of 708,000. Economists surveyed by MarketWatch had expected housing starts to rise in June to an annual rate of 750,000 on a seasonally adjusted basis. Permits for new construction, viewed as a gauge of future demand, edged 3.7% lower to an annual rate of 755,000 from 784,000 in May. Permits for single-family homes, which account for three-quarters of the housing market, rose a scant 0.6% to an annual rate of 493,000 last month. More than half of the increase in housing starts in June involved buildings with five or more units.

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- U.S. stock futures stayed lower on Wednesday after data showed that housing starts rose 6.9% in June, but building permits fell slightly. Futures on the Dow Jones Industrial Average SPU2 -0.26% dropped 36 points to 12,701 and those on the S&P 500 index SPU2 -0.26% fell 4.30 points to 1,354.2. Nasdaq 100 futures NDU2 -0.22% declined 6.75 points to 2,580.2.

 

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- The dollar and Treasury prices held onto gains on Wednesday after a report showed U.S. housing starts in June rose to a higher rate than analysts expected. Yields on 10-year notes 10_YEAR -1.98% , which move inversely to prices, fell 3 basis points to 1.48%. The dollar index DXY +0.27% , which tracks the U.S. unit against six currencies, rose to 83.244, from 83.075 late Tuesday. The euro EURUSD -0.5271% fell to $1.2236 compared with $1.2278 late Tuesday in North American trading. Analysts will again tune into Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke's testimony to Congress. Though his prepared remarks will likely match those given Tuesday, any hints about when or what form of easing could come later will be the focus of the questioning period.
