ผู้นำอียิปต์ ต้านแรงประท้วงไม่ไหว ยอมประกาศปลดรัฐมนตรีทั้งคณะ รับปากปฏิรูปเศรษฐกิจ-การเมือง

ประธานาธิบดีฮอสนี มูบารักแห่งอียิปต์ ประกาศปลดรัฐบาลทั้งคณะ หลังจากการประท้วงยืดเยื้อติดกัน 4 วันเพื่อเรียกร้องให้เขาลาออก และมีผู้เสียชีวิตอย่างน้อย 27 ราย มูบารักยังรับปากจะปฏิรูปเศรษฐกิจ-การเมือง เพื่อให้แน่ใจว่าระบบตุลาการจะมีอิสระ และประชาชนมีเสรีภาพมากขึ้น ทั้งยังจะมีการดำเนินมาตรการใหม่ๆ เพื่อแก้ปัญหาว่างงาน เพิ่มมาตรฐานความเป็นอยู่ ปรับปรุงบริการ และการช่วยเหลือคนจนมูบารัก ซึ่งอยู่ในอำนาจมา 30 ปี ไม่ได้พูดถึงการเปลี่ยนแปลงด้านอื่น ทั้งที่การประท้วงลุกลามในกรุงไคโรและเมืองใหญ่ๆ หลังการประกาศเคอร์ฟิวไม่ให้ประชาชนออกนอกบ้านเวลา 18.00-19.00 น. ในกรุงไคโร อเลกซานเดรีย และสุเอซ แต่ขยายเคอร์ฟิวเป็นทั่วทุกเมืองในเวลาต่อมา

 

นอกจากนั้น มูบารักยังส่งทหารออกควบคุมสถานการณ์ แต่ผู้ประท้วงก็เรียกร้องให้ทหารเข้าร่วมการประท้วงกับประชาชนผู้ประท้วงได้จุดไฟเผาสำนักงานใหญ่พรรคประชาธิปไตยแห่งชาติของมูบารัก ทำให้เพลิงลุกไหม้ต่อเนื่องหลังเวลาผ่านไป 6 ชั่วโมง ส่วนในเมืองสุเอซ ผู้ประท้วงได้บุกสถานีตำรวจ ยึดอาวุธ และจุดไฟเผารถตำรวจ ทำให้เกิดการปะทะกันอย่างหนักนอกจากนั้น ยังมีการปล้นสะดมในหลายจุดของกรุงไคโร รวมถึงสำนักงานที่เกี่ยวข้องกับรัฐบาล โดยมีผู้ขโมยอุปกรณ์สำนักงานไปและตำรวจไม่ได้เข้าห้ามปราม

 

ขณะที่นายโมฮาเหม็ด เอลบาราได้ แกนนำนักเคลื่อนไหว ซึ่งกล่าวว่าพร้อมเป็นผู้นำรัฐบาลเฉพาะกาล ต้องเข้าไปหลบในมัสยิดหลังจากถูกตำรวจกวาดต้อนพร้อมฝูงชย 2,000 คนด้านรัฐบาลสหรัฐเตือนชาวอเมริกันไม่ให้เดินทางไปอียิปต์ หากไม่มีเหตุจำเป็น ขณะนักวิเคราะห์มองว่าสหรัฐวิตกมากขึ้นว่าการที่อียิปต์ไม่ยอมปฏิรูปการเมืองอาจทำให้เกิดความรุนแรงมากขึ้น

 

ทั้งนี้ อียิปต์เป็นผู้รับความช่วยเหลือจากสหรัฐรายใหญ่ที่สุดรายหนึ่ง ด้วยเงินช่วยเหลือทางทหารปีละ 1.3 ล้านดอลลาร์ขณะที่ผู้ให้บริการโทรศัพท์มือถือทุกรายในอียิปต์ได้รับคำสั่งให้ระงับบริการในบางพื้นที่ ก่อนหน้านี้มีรายงานแล้วว่าการเชื่อมต่ออินเทอร์เนตในประเทศใช้การไม่ได้ทั้งนี้ สัญญานมือถือที่ไม่สม่ำเสมอและการไม่สามารถส่งข้อความได้ ทำให้ผู้ประท้วงติดต่อกันไม่ได้

Mubarak appoints leaders as protests rage

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) — Chaos reigned in Cairo and other Egyptian cities Saturday night as protesters ignored a curfew and continued sometimes-violent demonstrations demanding President Hosni Mubarak’s departure

 

Saturday’s demonstrations came after Mubarak earlier in the day created the new office of vice president and filled it with his intelligence chief and picked another insider to become prime minister and form a new government.

 

Those appointments came on the heels of demands from the the U.S. and other nations that Mubarak back up his promises of reforms with actions. There was no immediate whether the appointments were considered satisfactory by the U.S.

 

The 82-year-old Mubarak appointed Omar Suleiman, 74, vice president and named former civil aviation minister Ahmed Shafik prime minister. Shafik, like Mubarak a fellow former Egyptian Air Force officer, was charged with setting up a new government.

 

The appointment of Suleiman was viewed in media reports as a signal that Mubarak may be establishing a succession plan that excludes his son Gamal, whom Mubarak had been grooming to succeed him.

 

President Obama was briefed by his national security staff on Saturday about the developments in Egypt, the White House said.

 

In the meeting, Obama “reiterated our focus on opposing violence and calling for restraint; supporting universal rights; and supporting concrete steps that advance political reform within Egypt,” according to a White House statement.

 

Suleiman, 74, was sworn in Saturday evening Cairo time, according to Egypt’s state-run news agency. Suleiman, a Mubarak confidante, has played active roles in the Israeli-Palestinian peace process and other issues. He becomes the first person to serve as vice president since Mubarak assumed office.

 

“The Egyptian government can’t reshuffle the deck and then stand pat,” U.S. State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley wrote Saturday on Twitter. “President Mubarak’s words pledging reform must be followed by action.”

Worst of euro crisis over, ministers say

 

DAVOS, Switzerland (MarketWatch) — European leaders have shown they’re capable of taking the steps needed to stabilize the European single currency, allowing the euro-zone to turn the corner in the sovereign-debt crisis, the region’s most powerful finance ministers told the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting on Saturday.

 

Noting “indications in the market of confidence,” French Finance Minister Christine Lagarde said the “euro-zone has turned the corner.”

 

German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said the euro would be “stable.”

 

 

The remarks came in a week that saw French President Nicolas Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel both use Davos to pledge a commitment to defending the euro.

 

The single currency has rebounded this month to trade at levels last seen in November. The rally has been fueled at least in part by increased optimism European officials are moving toward a longer-term resolution of a debt crisis that has forced Greece and Ireland to seek bailouts and threatens to push Portugal and possibly Spain.

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) — While the world is glued to live coverage of running street battles in Cairo, oil prices are nervously edging ever higher. There are good reasons for that.

 

Egypt is not a major oil producer. It pumps less than a 700,000 barrels a day, and while that number is expected to grow as exploration pushes further offshore, the political turmoil in Cairo poses little threat to global supplies. That supports the notion that the 4% jump Friday in the price of crude oil is driven more by speculation than fundamental market concerns.

 

But there are other concerns tied closely to the transportation of oil.

 

The Suez-Mediterranean pipeline system runs along Egypt’s Suez Canal, linking the Gulf of Suez to Sidi Kerir on the Mediterranean. The line can carry up to 2.5 million barrels of oil a day, most if it bound from the Persian Gulf to Europe’s refineries.

 

Like the narrow Hormuz Strait that the world’s supertankers sail through when leaving the Persian Gulf, the Sumed pipeline is one of those transit choke points oil traders like to fret over. The heightened threat of sabotage to such a key line really makes them fret.

 

The Sumed line is fed by tankers arriving from the main oil export terminals of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates. These four, along with Egypt, also own the line through a partnership called the Arab Petroleum Pipelines Co.

 

Interestingly, reports of riots sweeping the Arab world don’t mention Egypt’s four partners in the Sumed line. That’s because they are sparsely-populated nations with vast oil reserves that over the past four decades have amassed wealth at a pace unprecedented in world history.

 

Not much of that wealth has flowed to Egypt’s 80 million people. And therein lies the rub.

 

There’s no shortage of entrenched strongmen running Arab nations. But all the popular uprisings ignited by the overthrow this month of Tunisian president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali have one thing in common: They are breaking out in nations of have-nots – Egypt, Yemen, Algeria, Jordan – whose citizens are provoked to action by the maddening concentration of wealth and power in the hands of the very few.

 

The Arab oil-exporting nations, with their vast wealth and tiny populations, have been able to paper over social friction with petro-dollars. But anger over the lopsided distribution of wealth doesn’t stop at the border. It can also breed resentment among impoverished neighbors.

 

At the end of the day, tensions between the haves and the have-nots infect the entire Arab world, which is why oil traders – not to mention various kings and sheiks – get jumpy when mob violence erupts in Cairo, the biggest Arab city of them all.
