WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) - Orders for goods produced in U.S. factories rose 1.3% in February, the Commerce Department reported Tuesday. Economists surveyed by MarketWatch expected orders to climb 1.5%. Factory orders were revised down to a 1.1% decline in January from a prior estimate of a 1.0% drop. Orders for durable goods - products meant to last at least three years - jumped 2.4% in February after a revised 3.5% decrease in January. Orders for nondurable goods rose 0.4%, compared with a 1.0% gain in January.

Portuguese yields spike on Gross tweet

Yields are 15 bp firmer on the day after Bill Gross opined that Portugal will need a debt restructuring. Yields are at 11.99%. EUR/USD continues to find buying just ahead of the 10-day moving average at 1.3295, now trading at 1.3311.

Philly Fed: Things are looking up in 47 of 50 US states

The good folks at the Philadelphia Federal reserve compile an index of leading indicators for each US state. 47 states showed a positive leading indicator in February, the Bank reports.

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) — U.S. stocks mostly fell Tuesday after the government said factory orders rose in February and as investors looked to minutes from the Federal Reserve’s last rate meeting later in the day.

 

The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.12%   fell 14.69 points to 13,249.80.

The S&P 500 Index SPX -0.14%   declined 2.52 points to 1,416.52, with financials the worst performer and consumer discretionary the best among its 10 sectors

The Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.15%   rose 4.43 points to 3,124.13

 

The euro EURUSD +0.0065% slipped to $1.3317, compared with its late Monday level of $1.3334.

 

The dollar index DXY +0.11% , which tracks the U.S. unit against a basket of six other currencies, traded at 78.943, down from 78.973 in North American trade late Monday. The dollar notched gains against the British pound, which is a component of the index.
