WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) - Small-business owners were slightly less optimistic in May and a majority expect the U.S. economy to get somewhat worse instead of better over the next six months, according to a survey released Tuesday.

 

The National Federation of Independent Business said its small-business optimism index fell 0.1 points to 94.4% in May, a level "historically low and consistent with the sub-par performance of GDP and employment growth." The NFIB's sales index fell 4 points to 2% and the earnings component dropped 3 points to -15%. The employment index, a gauge of hiring plans, did rise 1 point to 6%, however. And the sales index is still at the second highest level in 60 months - only April was higher - despite the decline last month.

FXstreet.com (San Francisco) - After being trading slightly lower during the session from 1,59 to reach intra-day low at 1,585.20, the gold has jumped to break today's high and test yesterday high at 1,606.15 on the back of "U.S. accounts" buying "gold and copper in large size" according to Reuters IFR Market services.

 

Currently the XAU/USD is pricing at $1,601.80 oz, reaching 0.65% gains so far today. Talks speak about "producers sell in light size ahead of June 11 peak."

 

"With dollar under pressure, gold advances right above $1600, adding near 20 bucks ahead of the US opening in less than an hour," comments Valeria Bednarik, FXstreet.com chief analyst. "Ongoing fears of contagion in Europe as Spanish yield differentials approach record highs, are sending investors towards the safe haven metal."

 

"Immediate resistance comes at past Friday high at $ 1608.20, followed later by a congestion area of intraday lows around around $ 1614," continues Bednarik. "Above this last, $ 1625 is next. To the downside, supports are located at $ 1598, $ 1592, and today's low at $1586.30."
