SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Crude-oil futures added sharply to their losses Wednesday following an inventories increase nearly five times larger than expectations. Crude for May delivery CLK2 -1.81% retreated $1.83, or 1.8%, to $102.18 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. It had traded around $102.80 moments before the data. The Energy Information Administration reported an increase in crude stockpiles by 9 million barrels in the week ended March 30. That contrasts with expectations of an increase by 1.9 million barrels, according to analysts polled by Platts. Gasoline inventories declined 1.5 million barrels, while supplies of distillates were unchanged. The analysts surveyed by Platts had expected gasoline supplies down 1.6 million barrels, while supplies of distillates had been seen down 600,000 barrels.

Also supporting bonds before the data were negative developments on Europe’s sovereign debt crisis. Spanish and Italian bond yields jumped after Spain saw borrowing costs rise and demand for its debt fall Wednesday, its first test of the credit markets since unveiling its latest austerity budget last week.

 

“We take some encouragement from the overnight bid, central bank and Japanese buying on very good volume, and a weak Spanish auction which serves as a reminder of some external influences,”CRT’s David Ader and Ian Lyngen wrote in a note.

 

Bonds stayed up after European Central Bank President Mario Draghi said, at a Wednesday press conference, that inflation remains a risk to growth and that all off the bank’s non-standard measures, including the liquidity operations credited with stabilizing the banking system, are temporary. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -1.18%   fell 174.1 points, or 1.3%, to 13,025.40, with all but two of its 30 components in the red.

 

The S&P 500 Index SPX -1.15%   declined 18.51 points, or 1.3%, to 1,394.80, with financial firms hardest hit and telecommunications the best performing of the index’s 10 major sectors.
