MADRID (MarketWatch) — U.S. stock futures rose along with European stocks as risk appetite built Thursday after successful debt auctions in Spain and Italy. Investors were also awaiting a heavy schedule of economic data as well as a European Central Bank press conference.

 

Futures on the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJ2H +0.60%  rose 62 points to 12,450. Standard & Poor’s 500 Index futures SP2H +0.47%  rose 7.3 points to 1,295.50, while Nasdaq 100 futures ND2H +0.48%  added 11.75 points to 2,378.75.

Changes in Retail Sales are widely followed as an indicator of consumer spending. Generally speaking, a high reading is seen as positive (or bullish) for the USD, while a low reading is seen as negative (or bearish).

The Retail Sales ex Autos released by the US Census Bureau is a monthly data that shows all goods sold by retailers based on a sampling of retail stores of different types and sizes except the automobile sector. The retail sales index is often taken as an indicator of consumer confidence. This report is the "advance" report, which can be revised fairly significantly after the final numbers are calculated. The positive economic growth anticipates bullish movements for the USD.

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) - The number of Americans who filed requests for jobless benefits rose by 24,000 last week to a seasonally adjusted 399,000, the U.S. Labor Department said Thursday.

The average of new claims over the past four weeks, meanwhile, increased by 7,750 to 381,750.

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) - Sales at U.S. retailers increased 0.1% in December to a seasonally adjusted $400.6 billion, the Commerce Department estimated Thursday. ยอดขายปลีกสหรัฐฯ เพิ่มขึ้น 0.1% ในเดือน 12 โพลคาดว่า จะเพิ่มขึ้น 0.3%.

 

Sales rose an upwardly revised 0.4% in November. Details of the December report were mixed. Ahead of the report, economists surveyed by MarketWatch expected total sales to rise 0.3%.

 

Excluding the 1.5% rise in motor vehicle sales, retail sales fell 0.2%. Economists had expected ex-auto sales to rise 0.3%. Core sales, excluding autos, gasoline and building materials, fell 0.2% in December after a 0.3% gain in November. This is the first drop in core sales since last December.

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- The dollar pared losses and Treasury prices turned up slightly on Thursday after a report said U.S. retail sales rose a less-than-forecast 0.1% in December. A separate report showed jobless claims rose to 399,000 in the latest week, a higher level than predicted.
